Why?

Over the years there have been many kidnap hoaxes that have played out in the media, the Susan Smith kidnapping, the runaway bride and now the woman, who supposedly used her cell phone to say she and her daughter were kidnapped. All of these caught the public's attention because, well, the media played it up big time, but in the end they all proved to be cruel hoaxes, Susan Smith's the cruelest of all.

This past week, Bonnie Sweeten, stated she and her daughter had been kidnapped and were in the trunk of their abductors' car. After an exhaustive search Sweeten and her daughter turned up at Disney World in Florida, where she was arrested and returned to Pennsylvania to face charges. Her daughter is now with her father, the woman's ex-husband.

Sweeten's hoax came as a surprised to everyone in her circle of family and friends, including her current husband. What will the outcome be of this supposedly out of character act, Dan Abrams weighed in on Saturday's Today Show:

Accentuate the Positive

Right after I posted my last entry about writing on my other blog I happened across a website called Reviewstream where you can find reviews of everything from cell phones to the latest movies. Although the reviews are by average people they are honest and often well on point. I did search Dan Abrams and came across this review, it may be old, but describes Mr Abrams perfectly.

From court tv to msnbc to nbc legal correspondent Dan Abrams is the best I have ever seen. The way he does all three is nothing short of phenomenal. I watched him on court tv and from that first time it just wanted to make you watch more of him. The way he presents the stories, covers the stories, even his pleasant sound of his voice is something you are pushed to want to watch. If you had a choice of news commentators to watch Abrams would be the one to watch. He also in his personal life has overcome great obstacles. His piece on nbc news channel 4 The Today Show was the first time he admits overcoming his illness with testicular cancer. He really is a trooper both in real life and his television career. Even though you can see him on 3 channels when it comes to news breaking stories you only hope that he will be the one reporting it because he nails the stories and pulls it apart so that lay people can understand the judicial system and what it all means. He’s great.
Rating: 10

My favorite part of the review is where the author says that Dan pulls apart the stories so that lay people can understand the judicial system.

Happy 43/6

Prior to starting this blog I had published another one and for the last two years have posted the following column for Anderson Cooper's birthday. Well, this year I am posting the column, by Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, for Dan Abrams,

Better than cake, candles or gift wrap

BY MITCH ALBOM

It was always about presents. That's the thing I most remember. You started thinking about your birthday weeks in advance, mostly through the eyes of "What am I gonna get?"

One year it was a magic trick. One year it was an Etch A Sketch. One year a new basketball. One year a record player.

I remember less about the parties, who came, who didn't, who wished me well, who wasn't around. I was a child, and I thought as a child. My eyes were on the prize. I still can feel the stomach-shivering excitement when my eyes popped open in bed that morning. I still can remember poking around in my parents' closet, in case they hid the present in there.

The sensation of unwrapping a box -- that I can recall. But the year? The age? The number of candles on the cake? The faces behind the voices that sang me "Happy Birthday"? That I couldn't tell you.

That was then.

Munch, munch, munch

I celebrated a birthday last week. And I can blessedly say, when it comes to toys, even the adult kind, I have all I could want. They don't interest me as much as they used to, anyhow.

My birthday these days, like many people my age, is less about "What am I gonna get?" and more about "How am I gonna feel?" How's the heart rate? How's the cholesterol? How's the weight? How's the vision? How am I holding up?

And lately, "How much time do I have left?"

I have written in this space before how my birthday ritual is to eat everything I don't eat all year round -- for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-between. And I can happily report I kept my face-stuffing tradition alive.

But I noticed something else this year. Early in the morning, my phone rang. It was a family member from overseas, wishing me a happy birthday. We had a nice chat. Then I checked my e-mail. My brother, who also lives overseas, had gotten a jump on the day with a 5 a.m. posting. He teased me about how old I was getting (he's the youngest). It made me smile.

As the day went on, the phone rang again and again. A sister-in-law. Another sister-in-law. Another sister-in-law. (I have a lot.) Two brothers-in-law. My nephews.

I opened an e-mail from a Realtor-turned-friend who was in Las Vegas. Happy birthday. I got an e-mail from a couple who I don't get to see enough. Happy birthday. Got voice mails on my answering machine from family, cousins, people in the business, a publisher in Brazil who is lovely and emotional and signs her notes "with many hugs and kisses."

She, too, wished me a happy birthday.

A Hollywood ending

My parents called during the day, and we spoke nostalgically. I was eating in a restaurant when my cell phone rang and I heard the voice of my oldest friend in life. We have known each other since we were in strollers. He lives in North Carolina now, but, somehow, he remembered the date.

There were cards, simple and funny, from relatives who lived many miles away. There were notes from readers and people in a volunteer group I work with. A few family members who were within reach spent most of the day with me, eating and having fun. It seemed to be a steady stream of voices -- voices, not gifts -- just checking in, wishing me well.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this. Usually in a column you try to take something from the news and make a point that hopefully enlightens. My birthday is hardly news. And the only enlightening thing I can share is this:

As my day went on, I found myself flashing on the end of "It's A Wonderful Life," where George Bailey's friends and family come to help him in his hour of need. As they surround him, he opens a card -- sent from his angel, Clarence -- and the handwritten message is clear and simple:

"No man is poor who has friends."

I would like, in this space, to thank mine. I didn't feel old this past birthday. I felt rich.

So Happy Birthday Dan AND Happy 6 month Anniversary to Abrams Research.

Keynote

This morning Dan Abrams, CEO of Abrams Research gave the Keynote speech at the Bulldog Media Relations Summit, followed by a Q&A period. Many people who attended the speech tweeted during it and from what I observed via Twitter the reaction was favorable. One attendee did an interview with Mr Abrams afterwards and it is posted on:

MySpace sentencing delayed

According to ABC News(sorry NBC they posted first)the sentencing of Lori Drew in the MySpace case has been delayed until July. This morning on the Today Show Dan Abrams(loved the tie)discussed what type of sentence the judge might impose. Would he go with sentencing recommendations for 1 year probation or side with the prosecuters and give Mrs Drew the 3 years they wanted. A third choice would be somewhere between the two. Listen as Dan and Matt Laurer discuss it:

Drew, the Donald and Dan

Here in Metro Detroit we don’t get the 10 AM hour of the Today Show, no we get Ellen. That’s fine for tomorrow when her guest is Anderson Cooper, but today Dan Abrams appeared on the 10 AM hour of the Today Show along with Nancy Giles and Chuck Nice to discuss the top news stories of the week. Remember the old Winners and Losers segments on Verdict, this was how today’s segment basically played out. The topics of discussion ranged from Miss California to Drew Peterson, including a bit about Elizabeth Edwards. It was good to see Dan once again discussing topics that didn’t involve a presidential campaign and looking so relaxed. So if you didn’t see the show watch the video courtesy of NBC/MSNBC

New for Fall

A new reality show will make its debut in the future, hopefully next fall. According to several blogs and news sources the popular books, Eat This, Not That! by Men's Health editor-in-chief Dave Zinczenko will be turned into a reality show by the company that brought "The Biggest Loser" to the airwaves.

For more information on the show check: themorningcall.com

Personally I love the books and talk them up every chance I get. I lent my copy of the original book to my cousin last October and didn't get it back until Valentine's Day . Seems it was passed around to friends and family, who found it absolutely fascinating, especially the woman who managed a Panera's Bread.

The Interview

If you check out the Daily Beast this morning you will find a transcript of the interview Dan Abrams did with former Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales. In his introduction Mr Abrams tells us that he was somewhat surprised at the response his questions got from the audience. The interview itself covered many topics from waterboarding to the firing of US Attorneys. Mr Abrams asked tough questions, and the Bush AGs came back with tough answers, defending their president and the policies of the administration.

Did Mr Abrams go too far with his questions? Was he too tough? From my reading of the transcript I would say no, but others will disagree. We spent eight years with an administration which was meant to protect its citizens, but in all reality worked against them for their own agenda. Someone had to hold the people involved accountable for what happened and Mr Abrams did that if only for an evening. His questions were direct, and ever the lawyer he would not let them get away without answering them.

The transcript will be found here:

Its all about the evidence

As the days wind down to the beginning of the Casey Anthony trial more new evidence and accusations are surfacing from Casey's Dream Team. Hair and soil samples sent to the FBI lab came back with results favoring the defense's case. And the police department which originally handled the case is in the hot seat for neglecting certain tips when the case first began. It is all getting so confusing since each side is releasing new documents almost every week. However, thanks to NBC chief legal analyst, Dan Abrams all the information is put into perspective as it was on the Today Show this morning:

What I found most interesting was Dan's statement that Florida allows the release of all this information prior to the trial. Many states don't allow media or anyone else to look at evidenciary documents prior to trial for fear that the case would be tainted. Then again this is Florida, the state that decided the 2000 election.
