MEDIAITE:

Let's start with what Dan told me about Mediaite after its one week presence on Online.

DA: We're really proud of it. It’s evolving and it’s getting better every day, but we’re really thrilled with where we are and had a great first week and now, and now the, now that the initial frenzy is over, now it’s about just doing great content.

Since the interview was only a week after the launch of Mediaite and it was all still very new I decided to ask about one of its most talked about portions of the site the infamous Power Grid. Even a month after its appearance people are still wondering why so and so has a higher rating than themselves. So using an example of a local journalist, Mitch Albom I received a clear, layman's explanation of it.

ME: I have one question. If someone is, say, a columnist, they’re in television and radio, how do you choose where to place them?

DA: They go in more than one category.

ME: I was looking at one of the guys from Michigan – Mitch Albom? He’s listed as a radio personality, but in Michigan he’s more of a columnist.

DA: Right. The only columnist that we really went with were people who have a national column that we viewed as, who were picked up nationally. And Mitch’s radio show, as far as, and again you’re putting me on the spot here a little bit with regard to one of the 1,500 people on the power grid, but I believe that Mitch’s radio show is syndicated nationally.

ME: Yeah, it is.

DA: So, that would explain why the distinction.

ME: How often is the power grid updated?

DA: It’s updated, well, every category, each category will be updated once a week. But, the updates are ongoing.

ME: I notice Anderson Cooper in the last week, he’s kind of gone down and then up and is kind of stabilized now.

DA: Yeah, well that’s probably based on his Google ranking.

If your interested in how the Power Grid works or where someone ranks check out the Power Grid FAQ I find it fascinating because its based on real data and not a popularity contest or favoritism by those at Mediaite.

This interview was done prior to the launch of Gossip Cop so that is why there was no mention of it here. Thanks to Dan Abrams for taking the time out of his busy day to talk to me and answer some of the questions that needed answers. I hope you all enjoyed the interview because I enjoyed doing it.
