Last April Abrams Media launched its 7th website entitled Mogulite. The site’s subject matter was to deal with business moguls both current and those up and comers and what they are up to, how they live AND how they spend their money. My first thought was why build a site for such a limited audience, say oh the 1%, but as I daily checked out the site I found things that were interesting, funny and very often insightful especially when it came to the women in the business world. Then a few weeks ago Dan Abrams tweeted that something exciting was going to be unveiled from Abrams Media, my guess was a new website.
While I wasn’t totally correct I was in the ballpark - Mogulite was to be relaunched on December 5th, 2011 as The Jane Dough(nice play on words.) The site would focus on women in business; Editor Amy Tennery described the site as follows:
“But primarily you will see us focusing on the often under-reported successes of female business leaders, and occasionally highlighting the subtle and, at other times overt, sexism in the business world — and the media that covers it.”
Again the site was laughed at by a few critics, mainly concerning the name and the play on words, but the majority of the comments have been positive. So what does the new site have to offer? Well, how about a Q&A with people like Arianna Huffington, a look back at a 1930’s PSA warning young women about moving to the big bad city of New York and of course there are the outrageous Toys all of which I found to be interesting.
A few months ago I caught a documentary about the rise and fall of Enron called, “The Smartest Guys in the Room” during which they interviewed Sherron Watkins, who blew the whistle on Enron. I always wondered what happened to her and The Jane Dough gave me the answer, in one of their first posts. They have also dispelled rumors regarding women in the workplace and set right a few of the article authors for their comments.
While I may not be into Martha Stewarts linens, household items or holiday decorations I do find her business sense useful – I have used some of her practices in my own business and found them helpful. Women know how to look at business from a different perspective; we look at it from the human point of view and not just from a monetary one. The Jane Dough seems to be following that pathway, in my opinion anyway and I hope that it continues to do so for a long time.
So everyone check out The Jane Dough, it’s not just for women.
